West Side Indicators Report

This report was completed in 2013 as part of an effort by the West Side Initiative to bring to life the objectives and strategies outlined in the ten-year West Side Community Plan. By monitoring key community indicators, West Siders can better understand community changes with respect to their vision of a thriving, successful and sustainable West Side.

We hope to update this report in future years to measure the West Side’s progress on achieving our vision for the neighborhood.

West Sider of the Year

West Sider of the Year is the highest award given by West Side Community Organization (WSCO). It is a singular honor given once a year to a West Side resident.

Award criteria
The award is given to a resident who exemplifies the spirit of community on the West Side.

The recipient:

  • Is recognized as a leader within the community.
  • Has engaged other residents in working together on behalf of the community.
  • Has helped as a volunteer. (This does not preclude consideration of residents who do significant community work over and above their employment.)
  • Has either:
    • Provided significant leadership on a major issue or activity during the past year,
      or
    • Provided service and leadership on community issues for numerous years.
  • Has improved or advanced community life through the individual’s action.
  • Has made valuable contributions to the community, such as time, energy, awareness, organization, cooperation and communication.

The award:

  • is given once a year, at the WSCO annual meeting.
  • is given to an individual. The award is not given to organizations.
  • is given to only one individual. Multiple awards are not given.
  • is given to a West Side resident. (The only exception is a longtime West Side resident who recently moved to another community.)
  • Can be given to any West Side resident, other than an employee of WSCO.
  • is a one-time-only award; no one can receive it twice.

The process:

  • Nominations are solicited from West Side individuals and organizations.
  • The WSCO board of directors selects each year’s recipient.
  • The recipient is announced at the WSCO annual meeting.
